To Get What You Want Faster, You Have to Slow Down

The process of personal growth is always one of desire. When you are perfectly content, you do not feel much desire to uplevel.

Wanting something provides direction and motivation.

Wanting gets a bad rap, especially in a spiritual context — but the truth is, growth is driven by want, desire, passion. Nothing happens until you recognize a gap between where you are currently, and the skills, behaviors, experiences, or state of being where you want to be.

Once you recognize that gap, what happens next?

You want it fast! It’s the most natural thing in the world to want to navigate that gap as quickly as possible, to want to get “there” faster. And very naturally, two seemingly opposing forces come into play.

1. Getting something you want, something that you don’t have access to or aren’t experiencing now, requires change.

and…

2. Your subconscious is programmed to view that change — any change! — as bad or uncomfortable.

So you want something, you want it faster, and the changes involved in moving towards it cause discomfort. Guess what most of us in our faced-paced, digital-device-filled Western culture do when we get uncomfortable?

We speed up, in the sense of glossing over and acting habitually. At some level, we believe if we can go fast enough we’ll speed past those uncomfortable parts, the inconvenient feelings.

This natural tendency to speed up or distract ourselves more is the root of all forms of avoidance, often hiding out in our minds as “relaxing.” We seek to move past the uncomfortableness of a fresh, present-moment choice — and in the process we remove ourselves from our own power.

It shows up as the negative tapes we play in our head; as the habitual “tuning out” with the TV or food or alcohol; as a hard striving to meditate more, do more yoga, be “better” in some rigidly defined way.

When you go very quickly through each moment, you go less consciously. You rely on habit. You make the old, patterned, thoughtless choice. You don’t notice the uncomfortableness or even the difficulty of making a conscious choice in the moment.

Unfortunately, this kind of speed ends up slowing you down. It stops you from getting what you really want. And here’s the worst part: the more you practice it, the more you lose connection with your internal guidance, your intuition, and your sense of creative power. You lose trust — faith — in your ability to create your own experience, the way you want it, because you keep creating what you don’t want.

You move past the moment so fast that you don’t even recognize your opportunity for discernment and conscious choice. This is KEY! It is by noticing an opportunity for choice that you are able to create, intentionally, a path that is different-from-the-past. A direct path to what-you-want.

So what’s the solution?

To speed up your progress, you have to slow down your process of discernment.

The process of discernment is the act of noticing each moment of choice, and consciously choosing your response, state of being, or action.

We must take the brief moment that is required to connect within. Take a second to feel what is happening inside your body. Notice how you are feeling and what impulse you have, based on all the information/guidance of the present moment.

Now let’s be very clear here, you can make VERY fast PROGRESS. You can transform a belief in an instant, shift an energetic construct now, expand with a breath. So, don’t think this means slowing life down, slowing everything down — it doesn’t.

Rather, it is as simple as taking a moment to check-in with the most important person, YOU. Developing a habit of being conscious, rather than unconscious. Because if you aren’t paying attention, you just might miss it!

This kind of speed is the speed of spiritual alignment, and it’s available to you every moment. You always have the power to shift your experience, moment by moment.

We’d love to hear your comments — what’s your habitual way of “checking out”? And what’s your favorite way of checking in, reminding yourself of your loving-kindness, your capacity for consciousness?
